Fequently Asked Questions

To be admitted to the membership of the Academy, a prospective member should have the following minimum qualifications:
  1. He/she should have made an outstanding contribution to education with not less than twenty (20) years postgraduate and professional practice in education.
  2. A prospective member must have attained the age of forty (40) years before he/she can be admitted to the full membership of the Academy.
  3. His/her professional experience could be either at the university, a research institute, a college of education, a ministry of education or its parastatals, provided his/her position:
    1. If at the university, is not less than that of a professor, and that he/she has held the title for a minimum of three (3) years;
    2. If at the college of education, is not less than that of a Provost and that he/she has held the position for a minimum of three years;
    3. If at the ministry of education or its parastatals like teaching service commission, he/she must have risen to the position of director or its equivalent position in the prevailing structure, and preferably holds a masters degree in education and has published professional articles that are judged as contribution to the theory and practice of education in Nigeria.
  4. All nominated new members of the Academy shall be referred to as provisional members until they appear physically for the induction. Their full membership counts from the day of induction.

The aims and objectives of the Academy shall be to:
  1. Serve as a forum for Nigerian educationists at the highest level, whose opinion on education commands professional authority and respect;
  2. Improve the quality of education throughout the country by taking the initiative to express views on plans, programmes, policy and practice in education;
  3. Promote the ethics of the teaching profession;
  4. Advise on the minimum entry qualification into the teaching profession;
  5. Promote excellence in education;
  6. Commission studies on educational issues as they affect Nigeria;
  7. Publish an educational journal;
  8. Perform other activities that promote the professional standing of the Academy.

Membership of the Academy, which is open to Nigerian educationists and others, shall be in four (4) categories:
  1. Member
  2. Fellow
  3. Institutional member
  4. Honorary Fellow

Financial members of the Academy (i.e. those not owing annual dues and levies) shall be entitled to the following:
  1. Use of MNAE and FNAE after their names, as the case may be;
  2. Free copies of the Academy’s newsletter;
  3. Purchase of Academy’s publications at subsidized rates;
  4. Right to vote and be voted for at all elections of the academy;
  5. Travel subsidies at Academy’s activities, the value of which shall be determined by the Executive Council from time to time;
  6. Representation of the Academy on boards of parastatals and other national education boards/panels.
